Vocational Courses

The vocational training provides trainees with the skills required for entry level employment in specific occupations that offer job opportunities and possible future career advancement.

More than 25 vocational courses are offered at the San Jose Job Corps Center. All are in courses approved by the National Office of Job Corps. Most of this Centerâs vocational courses are taught by the Central County Occupational Center ( at their state-of-the-art training center in San Jose. CCOC also teaches four courses at the Job Corps Center, they are the Cement Masonry component of the Building and Apartment Maintenance class, Financial Computer Accounting, Office Occupations, and Landscape Technician.

At the Job Corps center, two additional vocational courses are taught by Job Corps staff, the are Culinary Arts and the balance of Building and Apartment Maintenance.

Each vocation teaches to competency levels specified in the official Job Corps Training and Achievement Records (TARS). Vocations also teach to levels beyond the competencies in the TARS if needed to meet local labor market requirements.

After completing vocational training to specified levels, some trainees may be selected for participation in Work-Based Learning in which they work in paid or unpaid internships at an employer work site. Work-based learning relates work experience with Job Corps classroom-based learning activities.

Trainees are assisted by the Job Corps employability and placement staff in developing job search and job readiness skills. As they become available for job placement, Job Corps aids them in obtaining suitable employment and in appropriately making the transition from school to work.

The San Jose Job Corps Center has developed partnerships with local employers in support of the education and training opportunities for trainees and in support of the hiring needs of the participating employers. Each vocational course in Job Corps has an associated industry council that helps develop course content and labor market information.
