Landscape Maintenance

BASIC TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Job Corps course title: Landscape Maintenance. Students in this class learn landscape design, construction and maintenance, sprinkler system design and installation and maintenance, plant identification, and greenhouse operations through classroom instruction and practical experience.

On the job, landscapers or groundskeepers landscape and maintain the grounds of property by using hand or power tools or equipment. They may work in nursery facilities or at customer locations. Workers typically perform a variety of tasks, which may include any combination of sod laying, mowing, trimming, planting, watering, fertilizing, digging, raking, and sprinkler installation. Workers may help brick and stone masons.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Groundskeepers do medium to heavy work outdoors and in climate-controlled greenhouses or work sheds. Physical agility and strength are needed to crouch, squat, and stoop while cultivating, tending, and lifting plants, and while carrying equipment and materials for various distances. The strength and stamina needed is different from job to job, but most workers should be able to work outdoors in all kinds of weather and keep up a steady work pace all day. With experience and more training, Gardeners and Groundskeepers can promote to supervisor, landscape manager, or contractor/owner of a private landscaping business.
